Port infrastructure facilities in the Malmö Northern Harbour
The Port of Malmö plays an important role in the regional, national and international transport system, and combined transport from Malmö has achieved a very large growth during the last 8-10 years. While transport demand increases, the present terminal facilities are lacking space and there are no expansion possibilities. It is thus necessary to establish terminal facilities with a larger capacity for multimodal/intermodal transport. A global project for the development of the Northern Harbour has been prepared to overcome infrastructure bottlenecks and to increase capacity for combined and multimodal transport in the Port of Malmö. Furthermore, by moving the existing ro-ro line away from the city centre, the environment in the city centre will be improved significantly.
The global project includes the establishment of a combined multimodal terminal which will consist of a ro-ro (roll-on, roll-off) ferry terminal with terminal area, a container terminal and a combined (railway) terminal. The terminals will be established in connection to a new dry bulk/multi purpose terminal with railway connection to the national railway system. Adjacent to the combined terminals a large new logistics centre of some 650,000 square metres will be established.
